About Richmond

Hi everyone!

First, I would like to thank you and congratulate you for coming to my blog. The fact that you are investing some time to read through my posts shows that you are particularly interested in gardening, not just the normal gardening.

Here’s some information about myself. My name is Richmond Tan and had been an avid naturalist since young. I enjoy spending time with animals and plants. When I was five years old, my parents bought me a set of reference books which sparked my interest in nature. Through these books, I can see wonderful pictures and photos of the fascinating plants and animals world… Ever since my parents saw my interest in nature, they brought me to various nature attractions.

I like going to the Zoo (Singapore Zoological Gardens), Singapore Botanical Gardens and other nature reserves. I had been visiting these places regularly till today. Plants and animals are part of my life!

I am particularly into carnivorous plant gardening when I was introduced my first specimen, none other than the Venus Flytrap. From that day onwards, my collection grew. Ranging from Venus FLytraps to more exotic plants like sundews and tropical pitcher plants, my plant collection grew to 20 pots, which is a lot for my apartment home!

In this blog, I will provide more information for carnivorous plants. I will cover cultivation, propagation and other aspects of these exotic plants.

Here are some other information about me…

I was borned in Singapore in the year 1985 and had been living in the Jurong East area for these years. I graduated from a nearby neighbourhood school, Fuhua Primary School, in the year 1997. During my time in Fuhua Pri Sch, I was a very timid and quiet boy. My results were not fantastic at all, but I do really well in my science subject. Friends usually will come and ask me for advice on growing plants. ( during that time, we were growing beansprouts!). Oh man, I missed those days!..

I went to Tanglin Secondary School in the year 1998, where I really enjoy my school days. I did exceptionally well in my studies and was streamed to the top class. I was also active in extra-curricular activities, I was in the school basketball team, the manager of the audio-visual club and also the Vice Head Prefect of the school. And in the year 2000, I was also selected to attent the 2nd APEC Youth Science Festival, a 12-day international science summit for students. During that time, I was exposed to more interesting science topics and able to mingle with fellow students around the world!

My secondary school life ended in 2001 and I had to choose where I want to go. I chose to study in Singapore Polytechnic for Diploma in Information Communication Technology (I didn’t choose a biology course!). I made wonderful friends and also actively involved in conservation efforts. I graduated from the polytechnic with a merit diploma and subsequently enlisted to the military in 2005.

My military life can be considered as a lucky one. I was posted to an office position where I got time to keep plants in my office! I also had time to teach my fellow soldiers about gardening when we are maintaining a garden in our barracks.

I became a civilian again in 2007 and now currently in the 2nd year, Electrical & Electronics Engineering of Nanyang Technological University.

I hope you had an enriching time reading my posts and learn something about gardening. If you had any questions on carnivorous plants, feel free to email me at horrorbotanics@gmail.com and I will try my best to answer your queries.
